Barra da Tijuca neighborhood and as urban area has recent history. The place began to develop urban planning and take momentum only in the 1970s when it appeared the Shopping Barra and large condominium apartment buildings. Barra da Tijuca was a swampy area with sand banks of forests, and the Baixada Jacarepaguá occupied by farms and mills.
